What Configuration For Mac For Photography

Hi, I have been asked by a friend to help with configuring Mac Pro purchase. Currently he uses Mac Book Pro (I think 15' or 17' model) with 4GB RAM hooked to 27' Apple monitor. The MBP purchase was really a mistake since it sits now for years tethered next to the big monitor and its own display is not being used not to speak about portability, most the machine was moved was when I upgraded the RAM and replaced one of the internal fans. He is amateur photographer who imports raw pics from his cameras and opens them up in those photo programs and prints out large format prints, you get the idea. Amazingly over the years he still uses only the hard drive that came with MBP, not terrabytes of storage as people typically use. And he would like something snappier, now he has to wait in those photo programs for this and that, even just opening the photos to begin with and he came with the idea of buying MacPro and if I would advise him on how to configure it. Now I've read last year's thread about Mac Pro and I know well how overpriced it is, that home amateurs don't need its sever grade reliability, expansion modularity, that in this case it is overkill and that he should buy iMac etc etc.
